Kaalika is a documentary project created in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, exploring the presence of tradition, devotion, and cultural expression through the people, rituals, and spaces of the city.
Rather than approaching these practices merely as grand ceremonial events, I wanted to look closely at the atmosphere surrounding them. I focused on the gestures that often go unnoticed, the symbolic objects that carry meaning, and the intimate relationship between individuals and their faith as it exists alongside contemporary life.
By allowing situations to unfold naturally, I looked for moments of quiet emotion and visual rhythm. These photographs are not meant to provide a single explanation; instead, they invite the viewer to simply experience the atmosphere.
Ultimately, Kaalika is my way of looking closely and listening visually. It is an attempt to use photography as a form of cultural memory, preserving the practices, emotions, and human connections of a specific time and place so they remain accessible long after the moment has passed.
